A mystical autumn equinox scene at twilight: a glowing golden celestial scale hovering in the center of the sky, one pan holding a radiant sun and the other holding a luminous crescent moon, perfectly balanced.

There is a moment each year when the light and the dark stand at exactly the same height. The Sun crosses the celestial equator, day and night meet as equals, and the wheel of the year tips from the outer, radiant half toward the inner, shadowed one. This is the Fall Equinox: the threshold of Libra season, the festival of Mabon, and one of the year’s quietest and most powerful gateways.

Why the Balance Matters

Equinox comes from the Latin for “equal night,” but the invitation goes beyond the sky. At this hour the cosmos is showing you what equilibrium feels like. It is not stillness or perfection. It is a held tension, two forces honored at once.

On this day the Sun enters Libra, the sign of the scales, ruled by Venus. Libra asks the questions that belong at a turning point:

The equinox doesn’t ask you to fix everything. It asks you to see clearly, and Libra’s gift is clear seeing without harsh judgment.

The Second Harvest

In the Wheel of the Year, the equinox is Mabon, the second of three harvest festivals. Lammas honors the first fruits. Samhain honors what has died and what we carry into the dark. Mabon sits between them as a moment of gratitude and reckoning: What did I plant in spring? What grew? What did not?

Not every seed becomes a harvest, and that is part of the teaching. Sometimes the fruit is a lesson, a boundary, or a door that closed so another could open. Honor the harvest you actually got, not the one you imagined.

The Descent Begins

Many traditions read this season through descent. In the Greek myth, Persephone begins her journey to the underworld as the harvest ends. The Sumerian goddess Inanna passes through seven gates, surrendering something at each one. Nature does the same, letting leaves fall and drawing its sap inward.

Metaphysically, the equinox opens the gate to the shadow half of the year. The days grow shorter, the veil thins toward Samhain, and the psyche turns toward what has been left unexamined. This is the season for shadow work, dream tracking, and ancestor communion. Growth now happens in the roots.

Ways to Mark the Threshold

Build a balance altar. Place two candles, one light and one dark, on either side of a central object. Add autumn offerings like apples, pomegranates, acorns, or turning leaves. Crystals that work well here include citrine for gratitude and abundance, smoky quartz for grounding the descent, rose quartz for Venus and Libra’s heart-centered balance, and labradorite for the shifting light.

Perform a gratitude and release ritual. Write what you are harvesting on one slip of paper and what you are ready to compost on another. Keep the first on your altar. Burn or bury the second, and let the Earth turn it into fertilizer.

Practice the scales meditation. Sit quietly and picture a set of scales in your heart. On one side, place your giving. On the other, your receiving. Notice which way it leans without trying to correct it, and let the insight arrive.

Reset your space. Clear clutter, cleanse with smoke or sound, and set the home for the inward months. The outer order mirrors the inner one.

Walk at dusk. Watch the light shift and feel the hour when the day gives way to the night. Ask what wants to be released and what wants to be kept.

Journal Prompts

  1. What did I set in motion this year that has come to fruition?
  2. Where do I feel most out of balance right now, and what is that imbalance protecting me from?
  3. What am I willing to release before the dark half of the year deepens?
  4. What part of myself have I kept in the shadows, and what does it need from me?
  5. What am I grateful for that I overlooked in the rush of summer?

The Deeper Teaching

The equinox reminds us that light and dark are not enemies. They are partners in a single rhythm, and the same is true within you. Your radiance and your shadow, your doing and your resting, your giving and your receiving are all necessary. Wholeness has never meant being only light.

As the days shorten, let yourself turn inward without fear. The dark half of the year is a womb, not a punishment, and what you tend there will be ready when the light returns.

May your scales rest level, your harvest be honored, and your descent be gentle.
